Ambleside v Barwell Cricket Club Midweek XI on Tue 14 Jul 2009 at
Barwell Cricket Club Won By 65 Runs - Champions !!!!!!!!!!

Match report On a day of sunshine and showers, both teams were unsure of a full night of cricket to decide this years plate. Knowing the importance of batting first on the Atherstone track, Barwell captain Guy Norris won the toss and sent his side in; this decision proved to be vital.

As Barwell openers G.Hines & N.Cowdrey set themselves at the crease, the heavens opened, and the covers were sent on with Barwell 1-0, a wide ball the only score. The sudden downpour soon stopped, and the players went back on, even with the ominous skies above.

With no more rain delays, Hines & Cowdrey set about the Ambleside bowling with runs racking up at 8-an-over, which could've been more if it wasn't for the injured Hines. Cowdrey soon reached his 50, which had already put the Barwell side in a great position. Sadly, Hines went soon after on 20, with a smart catch from Ambleside's Wagstaff.

Although this broke the strong opening partnership, this only brought Barwell's J.Steane to the crease with big expectations. With this fall of wicket, Amblesides captain made a smart decision - bringing Baker into the attack. This slowed even the impressive Cowdrey, but singles still came easily as the score ticked over.

Baker soon got his first victim, Steane clean bowled, definately an important wicket. Captain G.Norris joined Cowdrey in the middle, and began to push the scores along again, although still not at the pace of the earlier run rate. This attempt of pushing the scores along proved fatal, with Cowdrey run out, on a very respectable 69, the days top score! Young D.Moran the joined Norris at the crease, but only made 2, another wicket falling trying to pushing the scores along - Bowled Tilley Caught Doane.

K.Newall then joined the Barwell captain at the crease, but Baker then got his second wicket, Norris getting bowled for 14. Young T.Wright then joined Newall, and although looking for his 3 was stumped by the Ambleside Keeper. With 2 overs to go, A.Stapleford-Jones joined Newall, and together they stopped the batting collapse, finishing the innings with a well hit 4. Newall finished 11no, and Stapleford-Jones 6no, with Barwell 146-6 a very respectable score, and defendable target.

Ambleside knew they had to go after the Barwell bowling, but Barwell got off to the better start Balac Caught at Mid-Off by Newall, bowled Skene - the second ball of the game.

Ambleside's batsmen never really put up much of a fight to the openers of Barwell - L.Skene with figures of 5-0-16-3 & J.Steane 4-0-22-2

After the opening spells, Captain Norris brought himself onto bowl, and asked Spinner K.Newall to tie up the other end. With a poor opening over including two 6's Norris' second over was a lot better. Wagstaff and Baker were cleaned bowled. For the Hat-Trick ball, the field was brought in, and Canavan edged one into Moran's gloves! Norris then kept the batsmen honest with figures of 3-0-24-3.

With Newall already taking one wicket earlier, he produced a quality piece of bowling to get Ambleside's final wicket, with figures of 2.5-0-19-2.

This 65 run victory was definately a good win for the Leicestershire side, as this year is their first in the Nuneaton Thursday League, and they are pushing on to get the league double too!
